Lindsay Lohan opened up about her allegedly abusive ex, and the whole situation sounds awful

When we heard about the recent allegedly violent incident between Lindsay Lohan and ex-fiancé Egor Tarabasov in Greece, we were horrified. The star, however, remained hush-hush about the incident, instead speaking about the role of social media in the deterioration of her relationship. Now, however, Lohan opened up to The Daily Mail about just how scary things got between her and her ex, and it’s nothing short of terrifying.

She said, “I realize now you can’t stay in a relationship just for love. No woman can be hit and stay with that person if that person isn’t prepared to say sorry.”

There’s never any reason that someone who loves you should put their hands on you or be otherwise abusive. Though the last thing we want to do is tell Lohan how she should feel about her own experiences, it’s *so* important to recognize that abuse is never okay, no matter how much you love your partner — and no matter how “sorry” they say they are.

Lohan didn’t directly call her ex abusive, saying instead, “Egor drank too much and he went crazy.”

It takes time for survivors and victims of domestic violence to come to terms with their experiences, and it’s not up to us to tell Lohan how to classify and explain her experiences. Unfortunately, relationship violence is all too common, and with the continual portrayals of unhealthy relationships as healthy and behaviors like stalking and nonconsensual encounters masked as love, our culture continues to misrepresent love as control.

“I’ve kept quiet for so long,” Lohan told The Daily Mail. “But now I’m scared of what Egor might do to me and to himself.”

In short: we’re here for Lohan, and we’re so proud of her for speaking out about this important issue. We know it couldn’t have been easy for her. Hopefully she’s got lots of love and support in her life right now.
