Haunting photos of abandoned Olympic venues

Have you been watching the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics? Of course you have.

But amongst the patriotism, competition and sport is a costly price tag. The final cost of the Rio Games are yet to be determined, but they have budgeted upwards of $10 billion — and keep in mind that on Olympic Games since 1960 has ever come in under budget.

Besides the monetary cost, there is also the infrastructure cost that typically sees venues built specifically for the Games go abandoned as soon as everyone leaves town. Now there are instances of venues, Olympic villages and housing being put to good use after the days in the limelight are long gone — but these are far and few between and the majority are left to decay.

A series of images showing these venues in decay has been put on Imgur, and it’s sad to see what once was glory is now crumbling. Check out a few of the images and see the full series on Imgur. Wonder what venues from Rio will be abandoned in a few years time?
